The anterior cruciate ligament is a piece of tissue found on the front part of the knee joint and it connects bones together. It is only one of several ligaments in the knee, but it is the most often injured during physical activity associated with playing sports.
When the ACL is torn, the surgeons can reconstruct it using tissue from the patient. Usually the patellar ligament or ligament of one of the hamstring tendons is used in the process to make a new ACL.
